Hello all,

Happy Thursday to everyone, but let’s also wish a happy birthday to JMAC! Legend has it that 12 years ago the Japanese Media Appreciation Club was founded as a DePaul student organization. Cheers to you, JMAC, on your special day! (whoaaa JMAC’s almost a teenager now)

Some Reminders:

Friday Night Movie Night is next Friday, October 2nd! Join JMAC and watch two Japanese movies of your choice! We’re still taking suggestions for movies to watch, so email us your suggestions for consideration as soon as you can! For guidelines on what we can/cannot show, check out the FAQ’s on the website for further info.

Next Week’s Meeting: Fall Quarter Week 3

Our next meeting take place in our typical meeting place in the Lincoln Park Student Center (woohoo!!) on Monday, September 28th in room 314A from 4-9pm. Join us for social hour at 4pm for a game of “Flying Turtles.” This game involves saving the lives of lil turtles and doing good for greater turtle-kind.

After the weekly PowerPoint presentation at 5pm, we will be screening Steamboy. This movie is about a young boy named Ray Steam, who receives a package from his grandfather on the eve of the 1866 World’s Fair. He discovers that this package is the key to his new invention. Ray must prevent his invention from falling into the hands of a shadowy organization for their nefarious goals.

And finally around 7:30pm, we will continue with more adventures of Yoshihiko in our running series The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King’s Castle.

Last Week’s PowerPoint (Week 2)

In case you missed it or simply want another look-see, attached is the PowerPoint from last week’s meeting! This week’s slides are a tribute to old school CLAMP, feature a manga that emphasizes the importance of the present, and an animated music video that iz very sad ;~;

…and on that note, t’is all from me for the week~

Next Week’s Meeting: Fall Quarter Week 2

The next JMAC meeting is this Monday, September 21st. It’ll take place in Arts & Letters room 202 from 4:15-9pm. This week’s time and location is different from typical JMAC meetings, so please note these differences. Our social hour will begin at 4:15pm with an origami crafting session followed by the vice present’s PowerPoint presentation at 5pm.

Our weekly showing will be Bunny Drop. This slice-of-life anime is about Daikichi, a thirty year old bachelor who discovers his recently deceased grandfather had a child, Rin, with an unknown mother. Upon her imminent abandonment by family members, Daikichi decides to adopt Rin and learns to balance a life of work, family, and his role as Rin’s guardian.

Afterwards (around 7:30pm), we will be screening more episodes of our comedic live action running series The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King’s Castle.

Last Week’s PowerPoint~ (Week 1)

In case you missed it, attached is a PowerPoint PDF from our first meeting! PowerPoints are a rundown of upcoming JMAC reminders and events, featuring recommendations of mangas and music videos from our members.

This week’s slides are themed with Bichitos the JMAC turtle, who introduces the JMAC board members and goes on a few adventures along the way. These slides also highlight a slice-of-life manga about changing the future and a music video about a kawaii approach to capitalism.

Have an awesome weekend, and hope you’ll join us this Sunday for Chinatown and for Monday’s meeting~

Sincerely,
Sara S.

Welcome to the Japanese Media Appreciation Club!

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the Japanese Media Appreciation Club at DePaul University, otherwise known as JMAC! My name is Sara, and I’ll be keeping you up to date with our weekly meeting agenda, social outings, and all things JMAC~

JMAC is a student organization dedicated to anything and everything anime, manga, light novels, j-rock & j-pop, video games, cosplay… and friends! Whether you’re a expert anime convention-goer or curious to find out about Japanese media, there’s a place for you at JMAC, and we hope you’ll join us throughout the year!

Next Week’s Meeting: Fall Quarter Week 1

Our first meeting of the year (yeyaaa!) will take place on Monday, September 14th from 4-9pm. We’ll be meeting in Monroe Hall rooms 114-116. Although we’ll be meeting for the entire time, you’re encouraged to come and go at your leisure while geeking out with us. :)

Our social hour starts at 4pm! This week’s social hour is more of a social mixer with general chatting and some nifty getting-to-know-you games.

Around 5pm we will start our weekly PowerPoint and introductions. Afterwards we will be screening Kara No Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin. This movie is about Shizune Seo and Mitsuru Kamekura, who can foresee the future. Shizune was sick of her predictable boring life and Meruka became a professional bomber taking advantage of his supernatural power. When their fates cross with Shiki Ryougi, a teenage girl, who possesses the “Mystic Eyes of Death Perception”, their immutable future begin to change.

Lastly, around 7:30pm we will begin our running series, The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King’s Castle. Each meeting we will screen 2-3 episodes of this live action comedy about Yūsha Yoshihiko, a young, adventurous child who inevitably becomes The Hero Yoshihiko after the Hero Teruhiko, who went searching for a miracle herb to cure a plague which struck the village, never returned. He pulls a sacred sword from a stone within his village, which determines him as the next Hero. Due to these events, he must embark on a journey to the Evil King’s castle to find a cure for the plague that has stricken his village. Along the way, he finds many new companions and allies, who help him reach his ultimate goal.
