The Japanese Media Appreciation Club

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the Japanese Media Appreciation Club at DePaul University, otherwise known as JMAC! My name is Sara, and I’ll be keeping you up to date with our weekly meeting agenda, social outings, and all things JMAC~

JMAC is a student organization dedicated to anything and everything anime, manga, light novels, j-rock & j-pop, video games, cosplay… and friends! Whether you’re a expert anime convention-goer or curious to find out about Japanese media, there’s a place for you at JMAC, and we hope you’ll join us throughout the year!

Next Week’s Meeting: Fall Quarter Week 1

Our first meeting of the year (yeyaaa!) will take place on Monday, September 14th from 4-9pm. We’ll be meeting in Monroe Hall rooms 114-116. Although we’ll be meeting for the entire time, you’re encouraged to come and go at your leisure while geeking out with us. :)

Our social hour starts at 4pm! This week’s social hour is more of a social mixer with general chatting and some nifty getting-to-know-you games.

Around 5pm we will start our weekly PowerPoint and introductions. Afterwards we will be screening Kara No Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin. This movie is about Shizune Seo and Mitsuru Kamekura, who can foresee the future. Shizune was sick of her predictable boring life and Meruka became a professional bomber taking advantage of his supernatural power. When their fates cross with Shiki Ryougi, a teenage girl, who possesses the “Mystic Eyes of Death Perception”, their immutable future begin to change.

Lastly, around 7:30pm we will begin our running series, The Hero Yoshihiko and the Demon King’s Castle. Each meeting we will screen 2-3 episodes of this live action comedy about Yūsha Yoshihiko, a young, adventurous child who inevitably becomes The Hero Yoshihiko after the Hero Teruhiko, who went searching for a miracle herb to cure a plague which struck the village, never returned. He pulls a sacred sword from a stone within his village, which determines him as the next Hero. Due to these events, he must embark on a journey to the Evil King’s castle to find a cure for the plague that has stricken his village. Along the way, he finds many new companions and allies, who help him reach his ultimate goal.

Hi all,

I’m casually composing this email from an on-campus computer during my final stretch of work, with summer on my mind and a chicken Caesar pita in my heart.

This is an invitation to our final JMAC summertime event! Join JMAC and storm Oak Street Beach (because our first storm to the beach was rained out by… an actual storm) (but also because we scheduled two beach outings this summer) (but mostly because of the actual storm) this Saturday, August 29th!

As always, there will be two meet-up locations for this Saturday’s beach outing. Mark will be in front of the Barnes & Noble on the Loop campus and Samia will be by the green Infant Smasher statue in front of the Lincoln Park student center. Both Lincoln Park and Loop groups will meet at noon and leave for the beach at noon-thirty.

Let’s hope this storm to the beach won’t get rained out like the first, but if it does, all updates will be posted to our Facebook event page~ Give us a holla and tell us you’re coming!

Dearest reader,

How have you been? Are you having a good summer? More importantly, have you been eating well? Miss you lots, xoxo. We should totes hang out with JMAC sometime…like this Saturday!

Join JMAC on Saturday, August 15th for a trip to the Malott Japanese Gardens Summer Festival at the Chicago Botanic Gardens! There will be a tea ceremony demonstration, traditional storytelling, taiko drumming, and more~ This event “officially” ends at 2pm, but members are welcome to explore the Botanic Gardens at their leisure.

For this event, we will be traveling to the Botanic Gardens via metra and will meet at the Ogilvie Transportation Center in front of the Jamba Juice on the second floor of the station. There will be two groups meeting at Ogilvie: a 7:55am group led by Sara (<– me) and a 9:55am group led by Samia. Both groups will meet up 30 minutes before their respective departure time to purchase tickets and to board the Union Pacific-North train to Kenosha.

Hello everyone!

So JMAC has an upcoming event! Tomorrow! Hhhah, totes not like I’ve been overworked at my summer job this past week or anything… (: Anyways…

The Ginza Holiday Festival celebrates Japanese culture on the grounds of the Midwest Buddhist Temple.There will be stage performances (such as traditional dancing, martial arts demonstrations, and taiko drumming), cultural exhibits, and Japanese cuisine!

Join JMAC tomorrow (Saturday, August 8th) for the Ginza festival at the Midwest Buddhist Temple! Meet up with Mark in front of the Barnes & Noble at the Loop campus or seek Sara (that’s me btw) by the large rusty green-colored statue in front of the Lincoln Park Student Center. Both groups will be meeting at 1pm and leaving at 1:30pm for the Sedgwick brown line stop.

Please be mindful of the $7 adult ($6 student) donation for admission to the festival. Check out the Facebook event page for the latest updates (as well as for a link for a $5 student coupon~).

Greetings JMACers (and JMACquettes, idk),

There are only t-minus 48 days until fall quarter begins, but who’s counting~ However, in t-minus 2 days, JMAC will be going to Mitsuwa Marketplace!

Mitsuwa is a Japanese supermarket located in Arlington Heights. Mitsuwa has an entire grocery store of authentic Japanese food, a bakery filled with delicious breads and pastries, a bookstore (w/pretty awesome stationary, just sayin’), and a food court.

JMAC invites you to check out Mitsuwa and join this anticipated outing on Saturday, July 25th! Meet Anastasia on the Loop campus (in front of the Barnes & Noble) or meet Samia on the Lincoln Park campus (in front of the Student Center by the Bay Crusher statue). Both groups will meet at 12:00pm and leave at 12:30pm, travel to the Rosemont blue line station and board a Pace bus for Mitsuwa.

Be sure to RSVP on the event page for the JMAC 2015-2016 Facebook group and bring your appetite (and your wallet) for some Saturday shopping!
